The novel artfully weaves a tale of a young bride, Nella, thrust into a mysterious household. The enigmatic miniatures she receives mirror the family's hidden complexities, leading to shocking revelations. Burton's prose is rich, painting a vivid portrait of the era's opulence and societal constraints. The characters are vividly rendered, each harboring their own enigmas. "The Handmaid’s Tale" by Margaret Atwood:  Beautifully written, and from the beginning it was redolent of Muslim domination over women by using manipulated bible quotes. A clever conclusion as it is written from a historical perspective.

The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak: Sensitive and thoughtful and well-researched, a tale of war-torn Cyprus with a fig tree as narrator who observes loyalties and family traditions. A poignant and satisfying ending.
